Darla Anita Daylily

Now that spring is well and truly sprung and summer is fast approaching it’s time to start appreciating the wide variety of daylilies starting to bloom.
Below is a beautiful example of a Darla Anita daylily.

Some information on the Darla Anita;

This daylily has an extreme, ruffled, edge.
This light lavender-mauve blend is complimented by an exotic edge. Large, heavy, looping ruffles are highlighted by a very wide golden border.  The flower form is full and flat, and good substance allows blooms to hold well,  even in very hot areas such as Florida. Strong scapes are 30″ in height, well branched, carrying up to 35 buds. Vigorous plants are fertile
both ways, producing excellent offspring.

The Darla Anita was named in fond memory of Darla Anita Eastman, a long time family friend of the cultivar growers and former daylily fancier of the Tampa Bay Area.

The Darla Anita was winner of “Best in Show” Central Florida 1998 and winner of the “Achievement Metal” Jacksonville Show 1999. Double Fan.

Daylilies are often overlooked by flower arrangers as a choice for cut flower arranging but in our opinion they make a perfect summer compliment to any table arrangement and in the words of the photographer;

“This bright bouquet of orange daylilies and pink Asiatic lilies is reflected in an old mirror and in the window.”

Spring Has Sprung - Time to Plant!

OK, so we are seeing new growth everywhere and if you haven’t already, now is the time to plant your day lilies. I recently bought some yellow day lily bulbs from our local Calloways store and I am going to give them a try and report the results back here. Calloways does not sell directly online but you can buy gift cards to redeem at your local store.

I bought a package of five bulbs for around $12.00 and hopefully we will get some beautiful plants from them…. Watch this space!

It’s Time For Your Closeup!

Day Lilies are fascinating from any distance but they are particularly interesting up close. Up close we can see that the flower parts include several stamens (the pollen bearing organs) and a single pistil with a three-part ovary at its base (immature seed capsule).  It is only at this close distance that we can truly appreciate the unique beauty of the Day Lily…

A Quick Word on Daylily Seeds

Daylilies are most often propagated by division, but they can also be propagated by proliferations and by seed. Seedlings of a daylily will differ from the parent, as any child might.

Daylily seeds are easy to gather, but not all seeds are fertile. Some plants may be sterile and never produce seeds, some may be fertile one way or both ways.

When seed pods turn brown and start to split, gently remove seeds. The best way to harvest seeds is to tie a bag over the flowers you have pollinated to catch the seeds, and leave the pod on the stem as long as possible. Seeds should dry (at least one month is recommended) before refrigerating or planting.

Germinate seeds approximately two weeks in any suitable germinating mixture. Cover seeds to a 1/8 to 1/4 inch depth. Place containers in partial shade to prevent drying out. Transplant when adequate roots develop and wait two to three years for a flower.

To properly hybridize a new registered daylily will take some patience and persistence, but since each seed-grown daylily is different from every other daylily in the world, even a beginning gardener can help create a brand new flower.
